The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) involved public and/or patient (PPI) representatives in the development of its recommendations for the implementation of a electronic patient summary record in Ireland in order to gain a greater understanding of the public and patient opinions on patient summaries and to incorporate these views into its recommendations for implementation. The representative on the Advisory Group tasked with developing the recommendations was engaged from July 2019 to November 2020.

The HIQA advisory group comprised on 23 members, including four patient representatives. The representatives were selected from HIQA’s professional network of contacts and HIQA provided terms of reference and a description of the proposed role to representative. During the process of consulting on the draft recommendations, a number of members of the public and patient representatives were involved as focus group participants.
